Magna Systems And Masstech Move Three New Zealand Archive To Cloud

Upgrading to Masstech Kumulate enables video archive migration from on-premise LTO tape libraries to AWS cloud storage and automate daily news archiving.

Discovery-owned nationwide channel Three in New Zealand has selected its video storage management platform - Kumulate - to migrate the broadcaster’s entire video archive to the cloud ahead of vacating the TV station’s offices and studio in the coming year. The introduction of Kumulate will also allow Three to automate archiving its daily run-downs via Kumulate’s integration into AVID iNews - the only purpose-built video archive solution for news. Masstech’s Kumulate solution was supplied to and will be supported at Three by their A/NZ technology partner Magna Systems.

“Working with the team at Masstech and its partner Magna Systems, we are confident we have a video storage platform that will grow and scale as we need,” said Shane Lee, Engineering Manager at Three. “Not only does Kumulate provide a technically elegant solution to our video storage needs, the flexibility that a subscription-based model provides, coupled with cloud storage cost benefits, means we have a platform for now and the future.”

Cloud storage offers broadcasters like Three "considerable cost benefits "when compared to the traditional capital expenditure required for on-premise hardware, says the vendor. Three’s existing library of news and entertainment content totals around 1.2 petabytes, stored on LTO5 media, and migrating this to AWS S3 Deep Glacier will result in significant storage and operational costs savings.

Magna Systems group sales and marketing manager Paul Maroni added, “In addition to migrating their taped-based video archive to the cloud, Kumulate offers many workflow improvements for both news and programming. As Masstech’s technology partner our role is to ensure the process is as smooth and seamless as possible whilst offering local, on the ground support every step of the way, especially during the COVID travel restrictions with remote configurations and commissioning by Kumulate engineers.”

“By combining cloud storage with an automated news archive solution Three has a system that will support their operations, both today and tomorrow,” said George Kilpatrick, CEO at Masstech. “The power of Kumulate’s video storage and content management capabilities, with integrations designed for unique newsroom requirements, make it the optimal solution for broadcasters and media organisations to manage costs, increase productivity and drive efficiencies across their video asset management lifecycle.”
