At NAB The Broadcast Bridge met up with senior executives from satellite service provider STN. Mitja Lovsin, STN’s sales and marketing director, talked about the market, and an exciting new project that will use HEVC encoding and is to air late summer, 2015. STN, the Satellite Telecommunications Network, is based in Slovenia and uplinks 500 channels from their teleport. The company also provides playout facilities for 50 of those channels.

Comcast has selected Elemental video processing software to power encoding for its X1 DVR. Last year, Comcast began offering customers the X1 DVR with cloud technology, which lets customers record TV shows and movies in the cloud to enjoy at home or on-the-go across devices. While in the home, X1 DVR provides access to the program guide on any device and nearly the entire channel lineup, as well as the Xfinity On Demand library.
A2Zlogix, a US provider of preprocessing solutions for uncompressed video, has selected Thomson Video Networks’ ViBE VS7000 HEVC encoder to provide adaptive-bit-rate encoding for delivery of multi-screen applications.
Riot Games, creator of the worldwide online game League of Legends, has deployed a fiber optic transport platform from Barnfind Technologies of Norway for its new 250,000 square foot Westside Media Center in Los Angeles, California. Over 67 million international players log on each month to League of Legends, with over 27 million playing each day and 7.5 million simultaneously at peak play time. League of Legends professional team tournaments are held at various locations throughout the world, culminating in the World Championship Tournament viewed live online by more than 27 million fans around the globe. The professional team tournaments are streamed live from the Westside Media Center.
US encoding vendor Zixi has been selected by iStreamPlanet for IP contribution to the latter’s Aventus live video encoding and multiscreen packaging service. iStreamPlanet is using Zixi’s live video transport software to provide ingest over unmanaged Internet connections, offering an IP-based alternative to traditional backhaul methods like satellite and fiber. iStreamPlanet will be enabling Zixi contribution over IP to Aventus from Q2 of 2015.
