Vendor Spotlight: Telstra Broadcast Services

Telstra helps customers span the globe. Offering a myriad of content delivery, production and playout services, Telstra Broadcast Services allows businesses, governments, communities and individuals to connect and expand their business across the globe in the most cost-effective way.

Based in Sydney Australia and founded in 1992, the company has a well-established presence in the Americas, EMEA, and the Asia-Pacific region with a flexible infrastructure backed by the fourth largest Telco in the world. It now provides access to more than 2,000 PoPs in 200 countries.

With a “Ground to Cloud” go-to-market strategy, Telstra offers clients digital file delivery, hosting services, digital archive and digital cinema distribution.

For Telstra and its clients, the emphasis is on connectivity—either locally or to far-reaching destinations of the world—for reliable content and media delivery.

The company’s Global Media Network (GMN) is architected for real-time video delivery, peak performance and reliability. With nodes in every major media hot-spot all linked via a global fiber network, it securely connects media rights-holders, rights-owners, and broadcasters to their audiences.

Telstra also offers a software-defined, cloud-based Internet Delivery Network that enables transport of high-quality content and live broadcast streams to any registered end point, across contended networks like the public internet. Built to maximize content value and revenue opportunities through rapid deployment with minimal expense, the platform can monitor and fine-tune media delivery by responding to unpredictable latency, jitter, dropped packet and network congestion.

Clients choose from three main services: Global Media Networks; made up of high quality, highly dependable and expansive distributed media and internet contribution and distribution global networks; Managed Services, providing a cloud-native production platform and services with end-to-end playout and streaming solutions; and Professional Services, proven teams with expertise in media, networking, events, operations, cloud and cyber security.

Under Managed Services, the company offers its Media Production Platform, a fully managed elastic software-based service that enables live production, playout automation, asset management, signal processing and master switching from the cloud or location of your choice.

Telstra Broadcast Services can seamlessly connect this Media Production platform to its global, media centric fiber networks, satellite services or internet services for all your media contribution and distribution requirements.

Using the power of elastic compute many applications in the production and broadcast chain can become cloud hosted and remotely driven. The platform is powered by Grass Valley’s GV AMPP as the application layer with Telstra’s media connectivity and managed services overlaid on top.

Telstra Playout can deliver the efficient end-to-end operations for pass through, fully curated or advertising and interstitial insert channels. As a software-based solution, this service can remove the need for the specialist playout operations hardware that are required in on-premise operations. The service is highly flexible and scalable to deal with multiple channel operations and the needs of Disaster Recovery (DR) business continuity in a crisis.

“Opportunity belongs to connected businesses, governments, communities and individuals,” said Andreas Eriksson, Head of Telstra Broadcast Services. “We’re focused on helping our customers navigate their unique cost and CapEx reduction challenges through our cloud based Playout services as well as a cloud-based remote production solution.”
