Cellcom Upgrades OTT With Broadpeak Multiscreen Delivery

Israeli OTT service Cellcom TV has enhanced multiscreen delivery by deploying Broadpeak’s nanoCDN Multicast ABR package. Cellcom TV has become Israel’s leading OTT service since its launch in 2014 with over 250,000 subscribing households.

Broadpeak’s nanoCDN multicast ABR and associated analytics software allows Cellcom to transmit live video simultaneously to viewers in the home on a range of devices, while maintaining acceptable quality of experience (QoE) and reducing delivery costs.

The nanoCDN itself package relies on a software agent installed in the home gateways of Cellcom subscribers. The agent receives and translates multicast streams into unicast for delivery on to viewing devices in the home. This cuts delivery costs because each household receives just a single stream irrespective of how many viewing devices there are, while also reducing incidence of unicast traffic peaks in the network. Then to maximize QoE nanoCDN enables automated retransmission in case of packet loss.

Cellcom then applies Broadpeak’s analytic tools to detect potential bottlenecks on access and core networks, as well as oversee subscribers’ QoE, obtaining data such as the bitrates streamed and the layer switches.
