Many broadcast and video production technology vendors are now offering virtualized versions of their hardware systems in an effort to give customers access to multiple types of task-specific software within a SaaS model.
NewTek is taking that idea one step further by offering entire workflows in a cloud-based environment via monthly subscriptions. This includes unfettered access to graphics creation, control software, expanded audio I/O capability, virtual PTZ cameras, an NDI-compatible KVM system, and a choice of pre-designed and rendered virtual sets from a library of layouts.
NewTek Premium Access allows users of its Video Toaster TC1 and IP Series of products to gain access on a monthly subscription basis.
The new service is called NewTek Premium Access and acts as a gateway to new software features and subscribers receive automatic updates as new capabilities are implemented. The service requires the latest version of TriCaster TC1 and NewTek IP Series software, which is available as a free upgrade for existing users and includes more than 20 new features.
“This is a good way for smaller production companies with NewTek technology to gain access to additional tools that they might not be able to afford otherwise,” said Will Waters, the company's VP of Worldwide Customer Success. “It will allow broadcasters to experiment with new types of programming in ways they never could previously because it was too expensive to purchase the required technology.
“We recognize that virtualization is something that now everyone gets and the response has been very positive from customers,” he said. “This service allows customers to take advantage of our internal development work and use it to their benefit.”
Take graphics, for example, a LiveGraphics module is part of the Premium Access monthly subscription service. This software allows users to go directly to air with 10 channels of real-time animated graphics authored in Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe After Effects CC for live output from a TriCaster TC1 and IP Series system
Waters said that broadcasters are looking to push the limits of what is possible with the TriCaster and other NewTek products without making large capital equipment investments.
This new approach to graphics creation allows users to replace text, images, and create links to live data, and then play those graphics back in real time. LiveGraphics does not require a proprietary hardware graphics engine and complements Adobe Creative Cloud in real-time.
Besides LiveGraphics, the Premium Access service gives subscribers five additional applications including LivePanel, NDI KVM, Advanced Audio I/O, Virtual PTZ, and a pre-designed virtual set library.
LivePanel allows users to create custom controls from a compatible desktop or mobile device anywhere on a network. Easily accessible through any Web browser or operating system, it includes production-ready virtual control panels for remote video mixing, media playback, audio mixing, and macro automation. The tool enables custom panels geared toward automating and simplifying unique productions and workflows.
NDI KVM is another tool allowing users to access TriCaster TC1 or NewTek IP Series systems from anywhere on a network. With NDI KVM, any workspace is simultaneously output as an interactive NDI video source. Simply launch NDI Studio Monitor, (a free tool from NewTek), select the source from among the available inputs and outputs, then view or run a production remotely from a compatible computer or device.
NDI is NewTek’s proprietary protocol for allowing multiple video systems to identify and communicate with one another over IP. It can encode, transmit and receive many streams of high quality, low latency, frame-accurate video and audio in real time. This benefits any network-connected video device, including video mixers, graphics systems, capture cards, and many other production devices. It also makes it possible to increase the number of sources available for live production switching, without directly attaching to devices, changing locations, or investing in high-bandwidth networks that simply replace SDI-based workflows.
Audio I/O provides support for 64+ channels of Dante and AES67 audio networking while extracting all incoming and outgoing audio channels, including embedded SDI and NDI audio channels. Audio professionals can seamlessly interface with external routing, networking, and mixing workflows, incorporate compatible audio boards, consoles, as well as USB sound devices.
Virtual PTZ expands shot selection and storytelling opportunities without increasing source count by creating and accessing multiple shots from any individual video signal. It starts with a full-resolution camera angle or video source, allows user-defined distinct areas of interest, and then stores as full-frame presets that can be switched to or transitioned from seamlessly. Virtual PTZ also includes live virtual zoom and real-time pan and scan effects.
