At NAB 2017 Snell Advanced Media (SAM) demonstrated the first applications of its next-generation control, configuration and monitoring solution, Orbit. A single interface that will eventually house all of SAM’s control and monitoring applications, Orbit has been designed to enable users to manage and view all of their control, configuration and monitoring functions via one autonomous system.
Earlier this year I had the honor of taking office as the President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), a position I will hold until the end of 2018. It is a truly exciting role; SMPTE has worked tirelessly to address the industry’s growth and to provide standards – in concept and practice – to enhance the current and future work of engineers, creatives and professionals. Its work has been highly influential, with the embrace of software-defined networking and media processing, and the rise of a fully connected world illustrating the extraordinary advances we have enabled in the evolution of TV and media.
IP has almost been positioned as a digital nirvana for both content generation and transport. We’ve been told IP is cheaper, faster, better and… add your own descriptor. While that eventually may be the case, getting there remains a challenge.
Unity was in the air at the 2017 NAB Show for real time production over IP networks, with broadcasters, vendors and standards bodies coming together for the IP Showcase.
