KT Skylife Picks Alticast Ambient TV for Turnkey OTT

KT Skylife, South Korea’s largest satellite broadcaster, has chosen the Alticast Ambient TV platform as the platform for Telebee, its end-to-end turnkey OTT service.

The aim is to resist growing competition from the major sVoD services such as Netflix and Hulu.

Ambient TV is cloud based and includes critical OTT functions such as delivery and security, for the main device platforms. It is available via a TV-as-a-Service (TVaaS) model designed to start with a small up-front investment and scale up as the subscriber base grows.

“Working closely with Alticast has expedited KT Skylife’s entry into the OTT and TV Everywhere markets and development of additional paths to increased subscriber satisfaction,” said Shinho Ryu, Head of Business Development for KT Skylife.

Ambient TV is modular so that operators can select the options they need, with functions supported including publishing, business management, business intelligence, cloud DVR and content management with metadata, as well as multiplatform delivery.

Other features include client software supporting UI/UX across various mobile device types, with commercialization of an Android OTT box based on Android 7.0. There are also security functions with support for multiple DRMs for multiscreen delivery of third-party premium content, utilizing AltiProtect’s Unified Gateway module providing a single interface to the pay TV headend. This model allows broadcasters and content owners to incorporate their own media protection algorithms.

Alticast is also developing an interactive advertising system supporting targeting with personalized content promotion and recommendation, including banner ads on TV screens that enable viewers to get more details on products and services. There will be scope for viewing these ads on personal mobile devices.

The platform interfaces with key elements of the media content delivery chain, including video headend servers, conditional access (CAS) and digital rights management (DRM) systems, system monitoring and client devices.
