Wohler will showcase new IP signal monitoring capability at IBC 2017
The new line of Wohler Technologies’ iAM (intelligent Adaptable Monitoring) series of IP-based audio and video monitors that we’ll see at IBC 2017 marks a departure in product design philosophy for this company with 30 years experience in audio/video measurement and display.
“Previously we’ve marketed up to 95 discreet products at a time,” Craig Newbury, vice president of sales at Wohler told The Broadcast Bridge during our exclusive pre-IBC phone interview, “But with the iAM series we are moving toward creating a collaborative platform all based on the same platform, all using the same motherboard, and sharing similar software.”

Wohler’s new iAM MIX, (a listening/selector panel), iAM AUDIO (which adds a touchscreen controller with meters) and iAM Video (has an MPEG option) will be demonstrated at IBC 2017.
As Newbury says these devices will all be SMPTE st 2010 compliant, standardizing separate routing of video, audio, and ANC (ancillary) data flows over IP networks as well as SMPTE st 2022-6 for transport of high bit rate media including 3 Gbps 1080P video, over IP.

“Traditionally, someone has had to sit in front of our equipment mounted in a rack to see what it was doing,” he said. “But the iAM series lets us put the monitoring of our monitors into a Web browser, so our customers can look at the levels anywhere they are that is connected to the same network our devices are.”
This let’s you automate and scale out the oversight of these monitors.”
And to facilitate this, Wohler is introducing new API’s (Application Programming Interfaces) through which third party devices can be connected.
“That way operators can do more with less equipment,” Newbury said. “Or, it may not require as much engineering knowledge to get the same job done.”

One of the most important products Wohler will be bringing to IBC is an extension of their iAM SDI Video to MPEG product in their “iAM-Video” unit.
“Yes, that’s what it’s called, and the MPEG part is optional on it. We’re trying to give our products more friendly names,” Newbury laughed. “But the serious point is that it allows the operator to evaluate the quality of the way the SDI has been encoded into the MPEG video stream more than ever before.”
Newbury says Wohler calls this “actionable intelligence”.
“This new design approach will let us bring new products much faster to the market in the future by reacting to customer demands as technology evolves,” Newbury wrapped up.
