Like the creative professionals that use them, today’s storage systems need to be agile and able to serve up content when it is requested, as quickly and efficiently as possible. A real-time performing ‘Primary’ storage system also needs to accommodate multiple, disparately located users working in a collaborative environment. While there are many solutions from which to choose, the type of storage technology chosen—spinning hard disc drives (HDD) or solid-state flash media (SSD)—could mean the difference between a project’s success and failure.

Many asset management vendors see the need to be something more than just asset management. One result was they first added editing capability to their systems. The result was not particularly successful. Then some tried adding encode and decode capability. Then storage management was tacked on, and of course there is the “end-to-end” solution that does it all under the guise of Media Asset Management. Consultant Gary Olson suggests many such combinations, or ‘bolt-on solutions’ simply confuse what should be considered an orchestration task.
