ATEME Supports French Open Coverage in VR

ATEME’s TITAN live software-based video compression solution was successfully demonstrated at the recent 2017 French Open to support a Virtual Reality (VR) application available during the entire tennis tournament. The application offered a fully immersive 180-dgree and 360-degree live viewing experience to tennis fans on site (and watching online) and was created by ATEME’s production partner LiveLike.

Claude Stoffel, EMEA sales director at ATEME, said the company has been working with LiveLike for more than two years on how to improve user experiences with VR.

“By combining our TITAN Live encoding technology and VR application from LiveLike we are entering the future of television,” Stoffel said.

Available for free on iOS and Android devices, it used ATEME’s TITAN Live solution to encode UHD signals at various bit rates in order to offer the best video quality experience on tablets and smartphones to French Open fans.

TITAN Live is a high-quality, high-density video software compression solution designed for cable, DTH, OTT live delivery of SD, HD and Ultra HD (UHD) content. It’s a CPU-centric solution that is hardware agnostic and runs on any OS: Linux, Windows and Virtual Machine. TITAN Live is based on ATEME’s 5th Generation STREAM compression engine and delivers high video quality at minimum bitrates via accelerated parallel processing. The solution also addresses current and future requirements by addressing main screens and multi-screen applications, from low resolutions up to UHDp60.

“The French Open organizers sought to break new ground and to be a pioneer in delivering this year's tournament in Virtual Reality to fans with such scale and quality,” said Fabrice Lorenceau, cofounder and head of production at LiveLike. He added that fans in attendance loved the experience, which was the first time VR was offered at the French Open.
