The Ross Video XPression real-time motion graphics system allows News 12 bureaus to monetize their lower third tickers.
With five hyper-local channels serving the New York Tri-state area, News12 Traffic & Weather is using a Ross Video XPression Tick-It platform (including a specialized server, software and real-time motion graphics system) across all of its bureaus to create revenue-generating text and information that is displayed on the lower third of the screen.
As part of the technology upgrade, Ross Video’s Creative Services team is working with News 12 staff to develop graphic templates creation that can be created, rendered and displayed on air within minutes. [A number of pre-defined templates are included with each Tick-it system.]
The Ross XPression Tick-it is an automated, multi-channel, multi-zone, server designed for tickers and informational channels. With its direct playout capabilities, Tick-it combines live data sources with manually entered content for a unified presentation that can be scheduled to appear as a video overlay or as a stand-alone information channel.
Supporting industry-standard graphics workflow tools, Tick-it uses the Ross XPression Real-Time Motion Graphics System for 2-D/3-D scenes and animations—simplifying the process of creating customized content. In addition, a number of pre-defined templates are included with each Tick-it system.

In order to streamline the news organization's workflow, the XPression production graphics system has been set up to facilitate interactivity between Tick-it elements and News 12’s MOS news graphics. For example, a two-line lower third ticker with a logo bug can make room for a graphic triggered from the MOS playlist and then return to its normal size when the MOS graphic is removed. And due to the XPression’s multi-layered playback capability, this can all happen on a single channel.
Staff can gain access to the various Ross tools via a Web-based interface, which allows anyone connected to the local or wide-area network to retrieve, enter, schedule, or control playback of content from any location. Robust user-rights management with audit trail ensures that only authorized staff members can gain to access any part of the Tick-it system
News 12 hopes that the Tick-it system will pay for itself in a short period of time through the scheduling of sponsor logos and animations that generate advertising revenue. Tick-it also supports “as-run” logging for proper traffic reconciliation and billing.
