WISI Brings Tibit Optical Transceivers To Europe

WISI Communications, a German vendor of broadband technology, has announced European availability of 10G SFP+ transceivers for 10G EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) and XGS-PON (Extended PON) applications.

Developed by California based Tibit Communications, a provider of Ethernet switching equipment, the OLT (Optical Line Termination) package embedded in a transceiver can plug directly into a remote node or Ethernet switch with Small Form Factor (SFP)+ ports. This makes it ideal as an overlay technology, or for new network builds, according to WISI.

The MicroPlug OLT is pitched as a more cost-effective and scalable alternative to dedicated OLT equipment, designed to consume less space and power than OLT products already on the market. Its modular and remote management capabilities are shoehorned for virtualized PON (vPON) products and software-defined networking (SDN) implementations utilizing commodity hardware.

The product is also designed to pair with third party optical equipment, including Ethernet-pluggable plug-and-play PON systems, without needing manual provisioning, the aim being to enable deployment of high-bandwidth services as capacity requires.

"PON should be much simpler to deploy than it is today." said Richard Stanfield, CEO of Tibit Communications. "With WISI Communications as a strategic partner we will simplify the deployment and operation of next generation xPON networks.”
