CP Communications Fortifies Ironman By Integrating Streaming Media Studio

CP Communications has completed systems integration of a custom-designed streaming media studio and control room for the IRONMAN Group, a sports event management company based in Tampa, Florida.

This is to deliver live coverage of the group’s branded multisport and marathon events OTT via its website and Facebook Watch.

Owned by the Chinese Wanda Sports Group, IRONMAN produces over 235 race events across 55 countries worldwide. These include the IRONMAN Triathlon, which combines swimming, biking, and running in that order as a single long-distance race, as well as the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series among others.

“With this new multipurpose facility, IRONMAN can now produce live video coverage of events remotely over IP, saving travel and crew costs for a faster ROI,” claimed Kurt Heitmann, CEO, CP Communications. Heitman added that the deployment featured bonded cellular links to enable video signal backhaul and distribution at sufficient bit rate.

On top of that the deployment utilizes CP Communications’ Dante to configure, manage and route broadcast-quality audio over IP, as well as NDI, an IP-based video networking platform that extends the HD-SDI workflow. These technologies make up the studio and control room to manage remote productions via IP, while simultaneously producing live studio segments for event commentary, news, and Skype call-ins. A digital media room supports production of live stream video podcasts and on-demand training videos for IRONMAN athletes.

IRONMAN had already purchased some equipment before engaging CP Communications, including a 4-input NewTek TriCaster Mini video switcher and an analog Mackie audio board. CP Communications, also based in Florida, then integrated the whole technical infrastructure to meet production goals. These included being able to record training videos with virtual sets and also to acquire, produce and stream IRONMAN’s own high-value sports content. There was also a focus on quality and consistency of the lighting for virtual sets, as well as keeping video and audio in sync with NTP clocking. Lack of audio/video synchronization is a common complaint over OTT video services.
