Sony Introduces New Shotgun Microphone Technology Along with a7R IV Camera

Along with the new a7R IV camera with a full-frame 61MP BSI-CMOS sensor and 15 stops of dynamic range, Sony introduced breakthrough digital microphone technology for small format cameras.

Sony unveiled a new shotgun microphone that, when used with the new camera, offers built-in digital conversion to provide digital audio recording in camera. Sony's ECM-B1M shotgun microphone includes eight pickup capsules, with three user-selectable directionality patterns for supercardioid, cardioid and omnidirectional pick up.

The eight high-performance microphone units work with a beam-forming algorithm to provide extremely sharp directivity that effectively rejects off-axis sound. When connected via the multi interface shoe of a compatible camera that features a built-in digital audio interface, the audio signal is directly transferred to the camera in digital form so that no degradation can occur. A simple switch also provides compatibility with a wide range of cameras using an analog interface.

Record level control, analog output for compatibility with a wide range of cameras and an attenuator makes it easy to set optimum signal levels.

A low-cut filter that cuts out subsonic noise is implemented through digital signal processing, maximizing audio quality at the recording stage. An advanced shock and vibration suppressing design minimizes low-frequency or handling noise. The absence of connecting cables also means that no noise can be transmitted to the microphone mechanically via cables and connectors.

A fur windscreen is supplied to help reduce wind noise when shooting outdoors. The microphone itself is about four inches in length and will be available in September.

A new XLR mic adaptor kit was also introduced, with two XLR/TRS combo connectors and one 3.5mm stereo mini jack. Both the shotgun microphone and XLR kit offer analog-out modes for cross compatibility. The XLR kit will be offered for $600 in October.
