Videon Shows New Low-Latency Edge Compute Encoder

At the recent 2019 NAB Show, Videon showed its new compact EdgeCaster encoder family that’s designed for professionals looking for ultra low-latency streaming, multiple-bit-rate support, forward error correction, and full duplex encoding/decoding.

Based on a Qualcomm SnapDragon 8.2 processing chip and H.264 encoding, Videon's edge compute encoders, the EdgeCaster HD and EdgeCaster 4K, are specifically designed to reduce heavy computational processes from the cloud, including transcoding, format repackaging from RTMP to HLS/DASH, and, with the EdgeCaster 4K, creation of multiple bit rates.

The new encoder was displayed in the AWS Elemental booth on the NAB exhibit floor, touting its cloud-native processing capabilities.

“While the Qualcomm technology ensures we have a platform to address this market, the other part of our equation is the linkage to AWS Elemental,” said Todd Erdley, CEO at Videon. “Together we enabled low latency live streaming in scale of less than 3 seconds. Seeing that on the floor in the AWS booth as announced product put a huge smile on my face knowing that we are the encoding technology making this possible.”

By processing video more efficiently on an edge hardware device, EdgeCaster systems significantly reduce latency and cloud service fees while improving the viewer experience. With these capabilities, the Videon systems are ideal for delay-sensitive video applications that demand low latency, as well as for high-volume streaming to limited numbers of viewers per stream, such as betting, auctions, security, or gaming.
