The standards for moving video over IP are all decided, right?

Not yet. Even so, the innovation presents unprecedented opportunities and empowers broadcasters to deliver flexibility, scalability, and more efficient workflows. Consultant and The Broadcast Bridge technology editor, Tony Orme, continues his tutorials on digital and IT technology in the article, “Video Over IP - Making It Work - Part 1.”

For those engineers just entering the world of Artificial Intelligence, (AI), many technical terms and definitions remain undefined. To help The Broadcast Bridge readers better understand key terms and markets, the tutorial article, “What Separates Artificial Intelligence from Automation?” will get you up-to-speed.

SMPTE’s ST2110 family of specifications was released in the fall of 2017 and is a real game-changer, providing full utilization of IP networks. When packetizing video frames, ST2110 removes the TRS so redundant timing data is no longer distributed in the packet. Active video is encapsulated in a datagram, which in turn is appended with a unique timestamp accurate to a few nanoseconds. Now receivers can reconstruct the video frame using these timestamps.

As a result, marketeers in every area of the industry are now presenting products that integrate AI capability into their products. Increasingly though, the definition of AI has become somewhat cloudy – many automation-centric tools are being labeled as intelligent. However, are they really AI?

Before we start labeling everything AI-enabled, let us first look into understanding exactly what artificial intelligence is. See, “What Separates Artificial Intelligence from Automation?

Need help in getting from SDI to IP?

See that hill up ahead? It’s not a hill, it’s Mt Everest and your job is to conquer that mountain. Rendered into familiar industry vernacular, you, video engineer, are charged with building an IT-centric facility. A SMPTE standard was just approved, so what’s taking you so long?

The book, “Building IP Media Facilities – Keys to Migrating from SDI,” is a video engineer’s guide to transitioning from digital SDI infrastructures to IT-centric facilities. The book is comprised of 15 chapters focused on key operational aspects of IT and IP terminology, networks and ‘how-to’ practical discussion.
