Belden Buys SAM – To be Part of Grass Valley
Grass Valley has announced that their parent company, Belden, has completed the acquisition of Snell Advanced Media (SAM) from private equity investor LDC for an undisclosed sum. The plan is to combine Grass Valley and SAM into a single organisation that will go to market as Grass Valley.
Grass Valley will continue to be headquartered in Montreal, Canada under the leadership of Tim Shoulders, Grass Valley's president. Eric Cooney, former president and CEO of SAM stays on an advisory role and will be part of the integration team to ensure a smooth combination of the two companies. Tim Shoulders is to relocate to Montreal.
The SAM brand will be retired although many of the well-known and familiar product brands may be retained.
With broadcasters facing an everchanging business environment, and with increasing competition from the OTTs, they have been looking to equipment vendor to provide solutions that can assist them with new delivery mechanisms, and improve efficiencies across the board. From acquisition to delivery the shift to software products running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, and the move to an all-IP interconnection fabric, has increased the pace of technological change.
The acquisition by Belden aims to improve Grass Valley's ability to serve their customers in this time of great business and technology evolution. The increased scale of the combined businesses should also allow the company to offer better support across all regions of the globe.
The details of the acquisition will not be released until more information is available. There is to be an agressive external communications program at and prior to the 2018 NAB Show to detail changes to the product portfolio. At the show the combined company wil exhibit on a single booth in the lower South Hall.
