Meredith’s six year agreement with Avid will keep it on the cutting edge.
Meredith Corporation is adopting Avid’s MediaCenral Platform as the basis of its new standardized workflow.
U.S. media group Meredith Corporation has announced that over the next six years it will upgrade 12 of its call letter stations to Avid’s MediaCentral Platform, enabling the entire group to take advantage of the benefits of an enterprise-level virtualized environment.
“What they wanted to achieve first and foremost was technological consistency across all of the overall station group,” Ray Thompson, Avid’s director of marketing solutions for broadcast and media, told The Broadcast Bridge. “And they wanted to achieve that consistency at a tangible cost savings.”
Flexible licensing was also important because the staff size at the various stations could vary, along with their training needs as equipment became obsolete.
“Now they will have everything Avid makes,” Thompson said, “ with the exception of graphics.”
This arsenal of equipment will include Avid NEXIS, the media industry’s first software-defined storage platform, MediaCentral | UX, the cloud-based, web front end for the MediaCentral Platform, Avid Interplay | Production for asset management, and Avid iNEWS and iNEWS | Command for newsroom management. Meredith will employ Media | Distribute to deliver content to social media channels, as well as Media Composer | Cloud Remote and Media Composer | NewsCutter Option for nonlinear editing, and Avid AirSpeed video servers. Installation, support and customized enterprise-wide training will be facilitated by Avid Professional Services.
“This will give them the kind of creative toolset that is common across the entire organization, along with refresh cycles that are coherent among all sections,” Thompson said.
“From a business perspective, this is the kind of ecosystem that few other groups outside of Avid can provide, and will help Meredith Corporation maintain their competitive advantage.”
I felt it necessary to ask if there was a potential downside to getting all their equipment from a single vendor. That’s a lot of eggs in one basket.
Replied Thompson, “Avid has been around for 30 years, and has a proven track record,” he began. “Also, we have emphasized openness in our product design so in case there is something we cannot provide, our systems can interface with technology that does. So having MediaCentral as the center of your enterprise does not lock you out from accessing other options when needed.”
