ATEME Shows Advances in Contribution and Distribution Encoding at IBC 2017
ATEME has added some new innovations to its Titan range including content adaptive streaming.
ATEME will demonstrate some new features on both the video contribution and distribution fronts at IBC 2017, with notable innovations being support for the AV1 codec and content adaptive streaming.
On the contribution side, ATEME will highlight two principle innovations. The first is the extension of an existing partnership with satellite communications provider NovelSat to incorporate its modulation/demodulation PCIe board, compatible with the ATEME platform based on COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) hardware. Secondly is ContentSecure, designed to protect premium content, including live sports.
Then for distribution, the firm based in Paris, France, is showing a new version of its ATEME Management System (AMS), based on OpenStack as the control layer and Docker for the virtualization layer, with the ability now to orchestrate virtual micro-services. The AMS uses the OpenStack APIs to deploy functions, assign IPs and provide redundancy (HA). It relies on the TITAN REST API to control the video services.
ATEME is also demonstrating the new AV1 codec from the Alliance for Open Media on a 4K resolution video stream. This codec has been designed for parallel processing and optimized for OTT delivery, where it promises to outperform the HEVC codec.
The second key distribution feature is ATEME Content Adaptive Streaming, which is based on traditional Adaptive Streaming technology currently used widely for OTT delivery, but enhanced with software analyzing content in real time to save on bit rate where possible without degrading quality. The firm claims that saves 30% on CDN costs while maintaining interoperability with end user devices.
