Vimond IO enables proxy editing in the cloud with background rendering for immediate delivery.
Vimond IO is a stand-alone video editing and media asset management system that exists entirely in the cloud.
“Since everything you do is in your browser, there are no plug-ins,” Glenn Pedersen, CTO of Vimond Media Solutions told The Broadcast Bridge in a one-on-one interview. “This means that although it has the look and feel of any other software-based NLE, you have everything immediately at hand. That eliminates a lot of waiting time—and drinking coffee.”
You gain this efficiency because all content is stored in the Vimond Online Video Platform, or in the customer’s own MAM (Media Asset Management) system. Clients see a low resolution proxy and since all rendering is performed in the background while editing progresses, the finished story is ready for publishing as soon as it is completed.
“Speed is what makes all the difference,” Pedersen said, “making Vimond IO ideal for news or sports. But, of course, it can be used for longer form projects as well.”
Since the system is completely browser based, it will work on any computer system regardless of OS. Pedersen has even demonstrated it on a $149 Chromebook.
Launched at NAB Show 2017, we’ll see even more enhancements at IBC 2017.
One of them, as Pederson explained is advanced audio editing, permitting many forms of audio/video splits, or what are sometimes called “L” cuts and “J” cuts.
You can also add pre-recorded Voice Overs which, in many cases, may be the only element in a package that needs to be uploaded.
But one of the most exciting new features we’ll see is Vimond IO’s extended captioning capability.
Not all NLEs can handle either the old analog video 608 captions (called "line 21 captions" or "CEA-608") or the digital 708 captions (EIA-708) which transitioned in with the 2009 DTV Delay Act.
“At IBC we’ll be showing Vimond IO ingesting captioning information, previewing them, editing them, burning them into the video if wanted, and exporting them with the timeline,” Pedersen explained. “Although the FCC requires these captions to be carried with the video either on live broadcast, streaming or VOD, some facilities rely on an ancillary closed captioning service to insert them. Vimond IO can handle this important task itself.”
Pedersen tells us Vimond IO will also use this captioning capability to drive text on video messaging, a common trick used on social media.
Finally, Vimond IO has one new capability that many NLE’s, either hardware- or software-based, have not even addressed. It can add markers for SCTE-35 (ANSI/SCTE 35 2013) and/or ID3 markers in a live or on-demand video stream. The full name of this standard is "Digital Program Insertion Cueing Message for Cable" and it's used in the US to mark a local ad insertion spot into the transport stream or in Europe to cue area-specific TV programming such as a regional news transmission.
Like the 708 captions, the SCTE-35 information is carried through intact to the final playout and mastering.
Pedersen said upgrades to Vimond IO will be as easy as receiving an E-mail, although the version we’ll see at IBC 2017 supporting SCTE-35/ID3 and captions (EIA-608/708) will officially be titled v1.2.8.
