Proving their systems are ready for UHD, Cinegy demonstrates complete production capabilities mixing IP, SDI and file-based video.
“This was the first year our booth exhibit was filled with UHD displays,” Andrew Ward, business development manager for Cinegy, told The Broadcast Bridge during an exclusive interview. “Although one of our claims to fame is the ability to set up a broadcast facility within two weeks, and even though the major broadcasters haven’t started sending UHD out over the air, we figured it was time for our systems to show we can handle this signal with a higher bandwidth than HD.”
This was important to Cinegy because, as a developer of software systems for collaborative workflow encompassing IP, capture, editing and playout services tools for news and other production services, they wanted to demonstrate to NAB booth visitors that even using COTS (Commodity Of-The-Shelf) hardware, their systems can easily stream the greater signal throughput of UHD.
“We were mostly showing version 11 of all of our products,” Ward said. “Our workflow begins on the input side with Cinegy Convert 11, a multi-server transcoding system. You can use it to perform repetitive export and conversion tasks by ‘printing’ material to predefined formats and destinations.”
Ward continued explaining that Cinegy Capture 11 is like a VTR on steroids since the user can configure it to capture as many streams as needed or gang captures by grouping capture engines together on a single server locked to the same timecode.
Cinegy Desktop 11 provides collaborative access to hundreds of simultaneous clients performing ingest, logging, editing and versioning of this content.

Cinegy Desktop is attached to the Cinegy Archive 11 management system and together they allow access to a fully-featured non-linear editor.
All of the capture features can be accessed through a browser over the web, but the NLE requires its own dedicated application.
Once a package has been edited to completion and collated with all the other elements for a broadcast, they get passed from Cinegy Desktop 11 to Cinegy Air Pro 11, which integrates HEVC stream encoding with high end Nvidia graphics cards. Cinegy Air Pro 11’s completely configurable interface enables entirely offloading HEVC and H.264 stream encoding entirely onto the Nvidia GPU.
“Cinegy Air Pro 11’s single core piece of software gives you three options,” Ward explained. “First, it can provide IP to SDI conversion and vice versa allowing people to move from SDI to IP. Or, it can function as a video server letting people use it as a drop-in replacement for a VTR. Finally, combined with our Playlisting system, it can serve as playout automation that can be driven by playlists created offline or configured while the program is in play.”
This is then all played out to air using Cinegy Air PRO 11 or live production through Cinegy Studio 11.
“Cinegy Studio 11 is designed to be driven by people,” Ward said. “That means it can either run off a pre-set playlist or by direct talent command out of a Master Control suite.”

They also had Cinegy Live 11 on display, a moderate-sized switcher for those moving toward IP production. Cinegy Live 11’s touchscreen interface lets operators mix between IP, file-based video and SDI, add effects, and output a 4:2:2 signal in SD, HD, or 4K.
So far, all of this has been conducted at UHD resolution.
But the company also demonstrated 8K video on a Dell 8K monitor, being driven by a GPU-accelerated DANIEL2 Player. And they had their Cinegy Multiviewer, the only unit certified at version 12, that benefited from on-board Nvidia parallel CUDA GPU’s.
Finally, Cinegy also demonstrated a channel-in-a-box system, called Cinegy JET Pack. The bundle includes products for playout, graphics, ingest, encoding, transcoding, 4-channel multiviewer, and live production, can be purchased outright or as an annual subscription.
