STG Mediaplex Launches OTT Service with IP-Based Automation

STG Mediaplex, a leading distributor of television programming over satellite to Thailand, is now running a streamed HD channel in conjunction with Bangkok-based OTT operator AIS Doonee. The new service is being played out using a PlayBox automation and on-air graphics package.

PlayBox Technology's AirBox Neo is a modular playout system that can accommodate Ultra HD, HD and SD material, delivered in both SDI and IP. It is designed to run without operator supervision, although it can also be operated manually to incorporate live segments. New additions to AirBox Neo include an ingest plug-in control for CaptureBox Neo, support of both SDT and HEVC IP for streamed outputs and interconnection to third party routers, notably the Grass Valley NV9000 and Ross Video NK-3G72. The TitleBox Neo system is able to generate a variety of on-air graphics and titles, which can be used live as well as for pre-recorded programmes.

The STG Mediaplex installation was undertaken in conjunction with Central Solution Company, which represents PlayBox Technology in Thailand. Jatuphol Suteesathaporn, chief executive of STG Mediaplex, comments that the new automation system has played a part in expanding the company's business into the streaming video sector: "We already operate three satellite TV channels. This new addition offers a variety of Hollywood content on multi-platform devices over broadband mobile networks. It is our first OTT channel and I am confident we will be introducing more."

Apichart Prugtayanon, project manager for Central Solution Company, adds that the installation is based on a full channel-in-a-box system that streams directly for IP outputs into the AIS network. "AirBox Neo enables STG Mediaplex to create and maintain its own channel branding using the TitleBox Neo character generation module and to schedule live or archived content for playout," he says.

The president of PlayBox Technology, Don Ash, observes that IP streaming is now "an important aspect of the broadcast business" due to the dramatic growth in TV viewing over IP-equipped devices.
