Nobeo Swaps Out Avid for Facilis Storage

German TV production service provider nobeo GmbH has upgraded its storage network by installing systems from Facilis Technology, based in Massachusetts, US.

Facilis worked with local channel partner, Cologne-based Speed Systems, to install three TerraBlock 24EX/16 and TerraBlock TX16 expandable storage systems, along with a TerraBlock Hybrid24 storage system. All the TerraBlock systems are connected to a switched 10 Gbit/s ingest and logging network, as well as to an 8Gbps Fiber Channel editing network that supports the seven studios, outside area and post production campus to manage all the processes.

The support for both Ethernet and Fiber Channel was a big factor in the decision to install the Facilis systems in place of Avid Unity MediaNetwork storage. “A key driver for upgrading to Facilis was our existing Fiber Channel infrastructure, including many sanboxes and host adapters,” confirmed Norman Ende, Head of Postproduction at nobeo Studios. “We like the option to use both technologies – Ethernet for service tasks and our fast Fiber Channel for editing jobs.”

The new storage systems add to an existing infrastructure serving German broadcasters and content creators, such as Endemol Shine Germany GmbH, UFA Show & Factual GmbH, Filmpool entertainment GmbH, RedSeven Entertainment GmbH and Norddeich TV. This infrastructure is still based on Avid for the principle editing functions, comprising 80 Media Composer edit systems and six ProTool HD edit suites.

According to Ende, a core feature of Facilis TerraBlock is support for collaborative operating practices, which nobeo considers essential for Avid workflows. “Already we can recognize the very fast behavior of the Facilis system and how it provides large, highly cost-effective amounts of storage – it is straightforward to expand our network with cheaper Ethernet 1 or 10 Gbit clients for logging and ingesting tasks,” said Ende.
