Applied Technology: Studer Takes A Modular Approach With Glacier Audio Control Surfaces

Today’s on-air and production environments require dynamic flexibility—but the static physical controls on large consoles often go unused and become obsolete. In a world of software-defined networks and hardware-based technology migrating to software and the efficiencies of remote processing service, broadcasters have come to expect flexibility and modular configuration in the technologies they invest in. Purchasing only the tools and capabilities they need has kept costs down and become an expected part of doing business.

That was the thinking behind Studer’s new Glacier Series of customizable audio control surfaces for its digital audio mixing consoles. With this new IP-based scalable architecture, customers pick only the tools and features they need and pair them with an intuitive multi-touch graphical user interface that makes it easy to address different applications and deploy the console in various configurations throughout a facility as and when needed. The flexibility to do more in the same chassis is the key here.

The Studer Glacier GUI eliminates the constraints of static buttons and dedicated labels by allowing you to remove unused parameters, and display only the controls you need. Studer Glacier Series makes it easy to adapt to broadcast situations, deploy the console in different ways around your facility, and interface with additional studio gear in ways physical consoles can’t.

The multi-touch Studer Glacier graphical user interface (GUI) offers unlimited flexibility via a virtualized control surface that lets users tailor the view to their specific needs. It allows users to host comprehensive control interfaces for additional equipment, and simplify integration into the studio environment. This was proven at the recant IBC Show when HARMAN Professional Solutions staged a demo of complete interoperability with the integration of DAVID Systems’ TurboPlayer Service and the Studer Glacier Series. The integration facilitated bi-directional control between the two products, with show rundown information and control embedded in the console. The point was to show that the high level of interaction between Studer Glacier Series and DAVID Systems playout greatly improves the user experience, and represents a compact, flexible solution that allows production facilities to enhance overall efficiency and optimize their workflows.

All controls are provided virtually via the interface, which can also be personalized to match the technical requirements of each user (displaying all the controls they need and hiding those they do not).

Removal of the constraints of dedicated hardware makes the surface more flexible for features, allowing surface real estate to be used for any purpose, not just knobs and buttons. Additionally adding new features and functions is very easy with a GUI based surface, physical buttons and knobs can't be changed but a multi-touch GUI can visualise and virtualise any control.

This streamlines operation and reduces visual clutter during time-sensitive situations. The GUI also hosts comprehensive control interfaces for additional studio equipment, including broadcast automation, codec management, content management systems and more.

More technical users can view as many detailed controls as they wish, while less experienced staff can create simpler interfaces with only the functions and controls they need. Each Glacier Series component offers forwards and backwards compatibility with Studer DSP platforms and brings new levels of control and versatility to any broadcast environment. And multiple modules can be added to create scalable custom-tailored consoles.

The first phase of the Studer Glacier Series is comprised of two physical surfaces that provide streamlined controls for live operation. All other controls are provided virtually, via intuitive multi-touch graphical user interfaces. The Central Screen Module features a vibrant display for assigning and accessing graphical user interface (GUI) controls. The Fader Vistonics module provides tactile control for quick operator multitasking and features Studer FaderGlow so users can assign colors to each fader for easy function or channel identification. Each module is a self-contained unit that connects to the Studer DSP Core via TCP/IP.

The Central Screen Module provides Power over Ethernet (PoE), Dante audio-over-IP networking, an HQ Mic Input, two Line Outputs, a Headphone jack, two Rotary Encoders and 26 Capacitive Touch/Push buttons.
