Apantac At EURO 2016 Soccer Championship games

Apantac came up with a cost-effective solution to provide 4K images to the International Broadcast Center (IBC) during the EURO 2016 Soccer Championship

Finding a cost-effective method of getting the highest quality signals to the 4K monitors in the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Paris, France for the EURO 2016 Soccer Championship proved to be both a financial and a technical challenge.

Fortunately, Apantac provided a solution with its 4K/UHD conversion technology, specifically Apantac’s 4K/UHD to DisplayPort (DP) Converter, the Micro-4K-DP.

“There was a 98-inch NEC UHD monitor in the main lobby for fans to view,” said Michel Rudelle, EMEA Regional Manager for Apantac LLC, “and a NEC 65-inch UHD Monitor in the main control room for quality control and the monitoring of signal feeds. It was important for all involved that these critical monitors receive a full RGB 4:4:4, 10 bit signal at 50 Hz so fans and engineers alike could appreciate the beauty of their images.”

Both of the monitors were getting their signals over fiber from the main venue stadium and each supported the DisplayPort 1.2 SST interface.

So Apantac provided a cost-effective alternative to HDMI by connecting the fibre input of each screen to one of their 4K/UHD to DisplayPort converters. Apantac’s DisplayPort 1.2 is capable of displaying 4K/UHD resolution up to 4096 X 2160, RGB 10 bits, at 50/60 Hz.

“We could have used Quad-Link 3G-SDI links (SMPTE 424M) to get that full RGB 4:4:4, 10 bit signal to conventional high end broadcast monitors, but that configuration could have cost upwards of $20,000,” Apantac’s Rudelle said, “and even the best production critical 3G-SDI monitors are not available in these large sizes. Our solution using Apantac’s DisplayPort 1.2 converter to provide UHD signals to the NEC monitors saved a considerable amount of investment without image compromise.”
