Just before AES, a new audio company from the UK has launched. It’s called Aston Microphones Ltd. and will start with a product line including two high-quality condenser microphones and two reflection filters.
The Aston team, led by James Young, Philip Smith, Alan Gavin and Jack Munro, has a unique back story, especially when it comes to microphone reflection filters.
Young, along with deceased business partner Mitch Carey, conceived the original Reflexion Filter when managing the global sales and marketing for sE Electronics in the U.S. from 2002 through 2014. Now, Aston’s engineering team is back to the drawing board to remake the well-known microphone filter.
“A big frustration has been the lack of any real development in reflection filter technology in the last decade since the release of the first model by sE back in 2006. We at Aston wanted to make a real step forward from this old technology,” said Young.
The design team at Aston decided, therefore, to go back to the drawing board with their take on a Reflexion Filter type product. This part of the Aston line has been led by Jack Munro, engineer and design architect son of Andy Munro.
Jack Munro worked closely with his father, one of the top acousticians in the world, to ensure that not only does the Aston reflection filter go far beyond traditional utilitarian design, but out performs all other reflection filters made today. Munro said the Aston reflection filter looks “absolutely drop dead gorgeous” and “out-performs everything on the market.”
He said Aston has virtually eliminated all of the failings of other brand designs, improving absorption, controlling specific reflection frequencies to thicken vocals naturally, and radically improving isolation from room ambience.
Retail price points are as highly competitive as any Chinese-made brand, and much less expensive than many of their European and American counterparts, he said.
Aston offers a free seven-day trial service for users to test their microphones and reflexion filters in the user’s studio through the existing signal chain. The company said interested users can email them at [email protected] to arrange a loaner.
