State owned China Unicom is the country’s third largest mobile operator
China Unicom, the state-owned telecommunications operator, has gone to Net Insight, a Swedish provider of scalable transport products for media, IP and broadcast networks, for a video contribution network to carry media content from live sports events. The operator is installing Net Insight’s Nimbra platform to contribute video from multiple sports arenas across China to its central hub in Beijing. Some of the units will be mobile and deployed for other live events when not used for sports.
The Nimbra MSR solution combines native video/audio service transport with carrier-class Metro Ethernet switching, enabling China Unicom to carry both video and data over its existing infrastructure, using dual uplinks for availability. The package also offers hitless 1+1 protection switching and video multicasting capabilities.
“China Unicom is our first major telco in the country and this is another important step forward for Net Insight, says Fredrik Tumegård, CEO of Net Insight.
The order for the Nimbra solution was won through Net Insight’s master distributor in China, NI Systems Limited, in the fourth quarter of 2014 and was delivered in the first quarter of 2015.
