Limelight, one of the early pioneers of Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, has launched a serverless compute package to augment its edge capabilities.
This allows developers to harness its global CDN network and employ their own code.
EdgeFunctions allows content workflows to be streamlined, taking time-sensitive decisions and allowing the user experience to be tailored to the customer. By moving this processing to the edge, latency can be reduced, with on-demand scalability. As such, EdgeFunctions is ideal for streaming video and content delivery use cases such as personalized streaming, content protection, dynamic ad insertion, A/B testing, and image manipulation, according to Limelight.
Switzerland’s content protection vendor NAGRA is a launch partner for the service. “We are thrilled to partner with Limelight to integrate our NexGuard Streaming forensic watermarking technology with EdgeFunctions and safeguard a premium OTT provider’s content from leaks and piracy,” said Jean-Philippe Plantevin, VP Anti-Piracy at NAGRA. “Using EdgeFunctions, we were able to quickly deploy our customized solution into Limelight’s network edge locations and run them on demand, at scale, for both VOD and live OTT watermarking workflows.”
EdgeFunctions is Limelight’s latest iteration innovation in edge compute. These now include serverless, virtual machine and bare metal offerings, aiming to make edge compute capabilities available how and where customers need them. Limelight launched its first Edge Compute offering in 2018.
