Sonnet Technologies has unveiled its Fusion Flex J3i three-drive mounting system for the 2019 Mac Pro, Apple’s most powerful computer to date, to enable storage of large files that may not require the fastest access.
The system comprises a custom mounting bracket and plates that support the installation of 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drives (HDDs) and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs (Solid State Drives), mounting hardware, power and data cables. The assembled system fits in the expansion bay inside the computer and connects the mounted drives to the ports provided.
Up to three SATA drives can be installed, comprising either two 3.5-inch HDDs plus one 2.5-inch SSD, or three 2.5-inch SSDs inside the 2019 Mac Pro. This adds up to 36TB of storage via the highest-capacity SATA drives readily available. The company described the systems as an affordable option for users who do not need the speed of NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), which is the category of SSD offering enhanced performance but at greater cost.
Sonnet contends that so far 2019 Mac Pro users have been forced to accept preconfigured capacity limits and drive types for expanded storage. Products otherwise comparable to the Fusion Flex J3i support only two 3.5-inch SATA drives but already include one preinstalled HDD, restricting choice, capacity, and performance, the company argues. Here users can choose between 2.5-inch SSDs and 3.5-inch HDDs.
