New long-life media with increased capacity and higher speed drives.
Sony has released its new archive media which supports 5.5TB per cartridge and 375MB/sec transfer speeds per drive. It has also unveiled a prototype of its upcoming 24-inch 4K LCD professional picture monitor for 4K HDR productions.
Sony's ODA Generation 3, the latest version of high capacity archive drive inclusive of USB desktop drive units, Fibre-channel library drive units and media cartridges developed for long-term enterprise data storage. Each cartridge comprises 11 discs of ‘Archival Disc’, co-developed with Panasonic, and provides 500GB of storage per disc for a total capacity of 5.5TB – that’s more than sixty percent increase over Gen2. The estimated lifespan is over 100 years under ISO testing.
The new Gen3 class 8-channel optical drive reads and writes both sides of the double-sided media to enable data transfer of 375 MB/s read and 187.5 MB/s write – that’s 1.5 times higher when compared with Gen2.
The media is resistant to temperature and humidity changes and is claimed ‘superior’ at withstanding external factors including water, light and EMP (Electronic Magnetic Pulse) events. ODA Gen3 can also reduce long-term expenses thanks to its eco-friendly, low power consumption.
Sony says it is developing an enterprise class library solution with Qualstar Corporation using Gen3 technology. The high capacity solution will scale from 4.7PB up to 50PB per single library and can scale-out to multi-library cluster configurations capable of managing hundreds of petabytes of archive data.
“With the new Gen3 technology and PetaSite EX solution, Sony is creating a secure and cost-effective solution that provides the capacity, performance, and scalability to serve organisations with their long-term storage requirements for media and entertainment and other markets,” said Norbert Paquet for Sony.
The new ODA kit is available in January.
UHD HDR Monitor
Boasting an ultra-high definition resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) and an all-white luminance of 1000 cd/m2, the forthcoming monitor is for 4K HDR production. It will have a wide viewing angle and 12G-SDI input as well as HDMI connection for flexibility and efficiency for creatives out in the field and during the live production process, as well as for cinema or commercial content creation.
