SSIMWAVE Launches Remote Video Player Testing

SSIMWAVE has launched the Player Test feature for its SSIMPLUS VOD MONITOR Inspector tool, enabling content distributors to evaluate video player experiences remotely.

The firm also claims this allows subpar video quality issues to be assessed objectively with source-to-playout visibility between any two points in the world into how individual video files appear to the viewer. This is achieved with the company’s SSIMPLUS 0-100 scoring metric, designed to mimic actual human vision as closely as possible. The resulting SSIMPLUS score then provides streaming and on-demand content distributors with actionable insights into how the viewer is affected by variations in key parameters such as bitrate, switches between variants to cater for shifts in network capacity, and buffer sizes.

The Player Test will be available before the end of 2019, initially evaluating HLS content delivered to players developed on the video.js framework. Support for additional players and video formats will then follow during 2020.

VOD MONITOR Inspector is a cloud-based tool that combines frame-by-frame and pixel-by-pixel analysis of video content with the SSIMPLUS algorithms. Using the new Player Test functionality, distributors can achieve three-point monitoring: at the source; at the output of the encoder, transcoder or packager; and at the player output. The resulting data can enable optimization of profile ladders, content variants and other variables, while minimizing impact on the viewer experience, according to SSIMWAVE. As one example, instead of treating all content equally, distributors can use the SSIMPLUS score to create and test multiple profile ladders, with both higher and lower quality variants, depending on the type of content being delivered and the device on which it is being viewed.
