Belgium’s DPG Media Goes All IP With Lawo

Flemish media company DPG Media is going all in on ST2110-based IP production with Lawo, upgrading facilities in Vilvoorde, Belgium and constructing a new building in Antwerp to support its wide array of programming. Antwerp is the site of its nationwide news operations.

Hardware systems installation started several weeks ago, and system configuration began in September and the first tests for the entertainment setup are scheduled for November 2019. DPG Media’s news service in Antwerp will be up and running by the end of this year.

DPG Media has selected Lawo technology and systems to supply all of its audio-, video- and control-over-IP activities, with the goal of enabling agile remote operation in various configurations. Some of the specified Lawo components will be housed in flight cases and used both on DPG Media’s Medialaan premises (in Vilvoorde) and all over Belgium during outside broadcast events.

Lawo has the infrastructure to make this happen and an overarching, vendor-agnostic control system to supercharge our broadcast operations.”

All video distribution, multiviewer generation and signal processing will be handled by a Lawo V__matrix platform equipped with thirty-three C100 FPGA processing blades for flexible, multi-purpose operation anywhere on DPG Media’s IP network. The V__matrix C100 blades will provide software-defined SDI to IP gateways, seamlessly distributed multiviewing, video delay, color correction, frame synchronization and video compression services.

The entertainment production operations in Vilvoorde (near Brussels) will include the ability to control remote productions over IP (LAN or WAN). The use of VC2 lossless video compression will enable maximum stream density over 10Gbps lines between the control room and the remote locations at ultra-low latency (a mere 20 video lines).

The remote setup comprises five software-based C100 processing blades for VC2 (de)compression and SDI to IP gateway functionality, which will be used to compress and transport SMPTE 2110 RAW streams received from Sony IP cameras at the various venues. DPG Media’s new Sony video production switcher is also IP-based.

The audio side will be handled by a 64-fader Lawo mc²56 mixing console, two additional Nova 73 routers and four A__UHD Cores. The A__UHD Cores provide concurrent access from several consoles. One central Nova 73 will connect DPG Media’s pre-existing Lawo audio setup to the new production facility.

The highly portable remote rack will be equipped with three A__stage80 multi-format audio stageboxes that natively support ST2022-7-based, fully redundant WAN remote operation thanks to two independent Ethernet switches from Arista Networks. Overall system orchestration will be handled by a Lawo VSM broadcast control system. This consists of a central server in the data center and 23 hardware and software control panels. VSM allows for vendor-agnostic, intuitive routing of all signals and streams and in-depth control and monitoring of edge devices.
