Blackbird Adds TownNews To Its Technology Clients

The unique capabilities of Blackbird are giving TownNews stations an edge in delivering news to its local stations.

Blackbird and its Blackbird cloud platform are aggressively extending its reach into the U. S. news market by adding a third deployment in just this year that now includes the 14 TV stations of TownNews and their partners.

“Using our technology, TownNews will be able to efficiently view, edit and publish video content through a simple browser to the cloud-based Blackbird Web site,” Ian McDonough, chief executive officer told me during our one on one interview from the UK. “This includes all of their daily news bulletins whether they break first on TV or in print.”

With the additional 14 stations of TownNews, this raises the ante to 39 stations in 24 states owned by seven broadcast groups using Blackbird technology.

Key to this is the unique Blackbird codec, which enables frame-accurate editing through the cloud.

“Because our codec is so highly optimized for the cloud, it can also be used to send the TownNews stories to social media,” McDonough told me.

But how does it get rid of latency when editing material stored in the cloud?

“As soon as the editor begins cutting a package, the source material they are working on has already been downloaded from the cloud,” Stephen Streater, the company’s R&D director revealed. “That’s how they get the practical effect of zero latency.”

He should know. Streater invented this technology.

TownNews will be using it in conjunction with their own Field59 VMS to deliver stories with revolutionary speed and control.

According to the Pew Research Centre, Blackbird is gaining entrance into a significant and growing market.

Local TV news networks in the US comprise over 350 stations producing around six hours of news content per weekday. The industry as a whole generates nearly $28 billion of revenue annually. The move to the consumption of digital news has been rapid with 43% of US adults now often sourcing news from websites and social media.

“By utilizing our technology, TownNews will be able to demonstrate the reliability of our product in large scale operations,” McDonough said. “America is such a large and rich media market, we are eager to show more stations how our Blackbird technology can pay off for them.”
