V-Nova’s Perseus Plus compression platform will enhance a variety of ATSC 3.0 applications to improve video quality.
V-Nova has become a new member of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), where it will help promote and contribute to the emerging ATSC 3.0 specification for digital terrestrial broadcasting worldwide. The company said that intelligent media compression is core to delivering new ATSC 3.0 services.
The ATSC 3.0 specification includes new types of distribution methods, including IP, for sending the next generation of video content to a wide variety of mobile and stationary devices. It also leverages the bridging of broadcast and OTT features and benefits.
V-Nova’s video distribution platform, Perseus Plus, takes a compression approach that enhances the visual quality and computational performance of any existing codec such as AVC/h.264, HEVC, VP9 and in the future AV1. A broad range of existing players and set-top-boxes can be software-updated to support the Perseus Plus enhancement for the best possible video quality and lowest power consumption on a variety of devices.

The ATSC 3.0 standard comprises around 20 standards covering different aspects of the system and now includes over 1,000 pages of documentation. The standards are designed to offer support for newer technologies, including HEVC for video channels of up to 4K UHD resolution at 120 frames per second wide color gamut, high dynamic range, Dolby AC-4 and MPEG-H 3D audio, datacasting capabilities, and mobile TV support. The capabilities also make possible targeted advertising and emergency alerts.

Perseus Plus is available as an SDK, readily integrated in many open source components such as FFmpeg, and third-party vendor products. This allows operators, service providers, system integrators and online video platform providers to easily integrate and deploy Perseus technology on existing ecosystems for the delivery of high-quality full HD video over bandwidth constrained networks.
