DataMiner Helps QVC Japan Migrate To Stunning 4K UHD Operations

For the past year the TV shopping channel QVC has been upgrading its facilities across the globe to improve the handling of content and the on-air look of its network. On the content side this company-wide initiative has seen a new DataMiner AI-powered network management and orchestration platform from Skyline Communications installed at QVC locations in Italy, the U.K. and the U.S. Most recently, QVC Japan followed suit.

Yohann Guilloux, Regional Account Manager for the APAC region at Skyline Communications, said that QVC Japan’s viewers are increasingly migrating to UHD televisions in their homes. As a result, QVC had to reshape its entire organization in order to be able to produce 4K content.

The QVC Japan facility in Makuhari recently underwent a huge transformation, both with the migration from HD to 4K and from SDI to IP. The DataMiner System now installed there serves as the management platform for all five areas of its in-house production infrastructure. That’s in addition to supporting all of QVC Japan’s infrastructure systems, which have been supplied by many different manufacturers, to ensure they work together seamlessly.

Guilloux said that moving to an IP-based 4K facility can unlock many potential business opportunities, but at the same time it could introduce many new challenges. That’s why QVC Japan needed to invest in the DataMiner platform. It enables them to ensure interoperability across QVC Japan’s entire ecosystem by complying with the SMPTE ST 2110 standard for the delivery of uncompressed video, audio and metadata over IP networks.

He also said that with the DataMiner system in place, QVC Japan is now free to pick the best-of-breed technology for their new IP environment, providing them with a flexible and future-proof ecosystem. They are now fully equipped to manage their entire facility through just a single unified interface.
