Rohde & Schwarz Monitors OTT, Tackles 5G and Shows Off Pixel Power at NAB 2019

Rohde & Schwarz keeps expanding its horizons—now into 5G broadcasting and also serious graphics with Pixel Power

One reason visiting the Rohde & Schwarz exhibit at the NAB Show 2019 is always so interesting is that, under their motto "Supporting you today. And for the future" there is just plain so much going on.

Fortunately, Patrizia Muehlbauer, pr manager at Rohde & Schwarz took some time away from the swirling crowds to help me sort out the priorities.

“A major draw for people to our exhibit is that Rohde & Schwarz is expanding its R&S PRISMON product family by adding R&S PRISMON.cloud,” Muehlbauer began. “It’s a cloud-based A/V monitoring solution that lets OTT providers use an intuitive analysis dashboard to see latest quality of service (QoS) data to respond to errors in real time.”

By accessing a simple setup wizard, it only takes a user minutes to add new virtual sensors to R&S PRISMON.cloud at different locations and connect them to the dashboard at any time.

As well as OTT, R&S PRISMON.cloud covers classic broadcast transmissions via SDI such as TSoIP, SDIoIP and 2110 in a single tool.

“Rohde & Schwarz is also taking major steps toward 5G broadcast,” Muehlbauer told me. “At our exhibit, the company is demonstrating the first end-to-end solution for LTE/5G Broadcast. But more than that, along with Bayerische Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting) we are investigating large scale TV broadcasts in an HPHT (High Power High Tower) 5G broadcast field trial near Munich. It’s the first such experiment of its kind.”

In addition, Rohde & Schwarz was inviting visitors to welcome their acquisition of the graphics company last November 27th, Pixel Power, which will henceforth be called "Pixel Power Ltd. – A Rohde & Schwarz Company".

This is an interesting stretch for Rohde & Schwarz, although both companies do share a significant background in IP technology.

“At the moment there are not a lot of common projects under way,” Muehlbauer allowed, “but that will develop over time.”

Knowing how diverse Rohde & Schwarz’s interests have always been, since Pixel Power has historically been a engineering-focused leader in master control and integrated playout systems as well as graphics, this will be an interesting pairing to follow in the future.
