EVS Celebrates 25 Years at NAB 2019

EVS’s “Ingest-to-Post” message is leading the way into IP production with new network technology, a new all-software server, and virtualized control systems.

“Our appearance here at NAB 2019 marks 25 years of emotions and connectivity,” Johan Vounckx, svp technology innovations at EVS, told the gathered crowd at the EVS booth during their 2019 NAB press conference.

“At this NAB we come with three major announcements related to our new products,” he began. “First, we’re going to be debuting our XNet-VIA, an ethernet-based live media sharing network designed to share high-resolution content between EVS’s XT-VIA live replay and XS-VIA studio operations servers.

It comes with 3 times the bandwidth of EVS’ legacy SDTI-based network and is simple to deploy with EVS’ XHub-VIA network switch.” The XNet-VIA has also been certified to conform to SMPTE ST 2110 standard for IP production, and EVS had a full IP remote truck, Mobile TV Group’s 45 Flex unit, on display at the outdoor section of NAB 2019 to demonstrate this.

But to fully understand EVS’s “Ingest-to-Post” message at the NAB Show 2019, it’s important to look past individual new product introductions to put them into a production context, and Sebastien Verlaine, marketing and communications manager at EVS, was good enough to take the time to explain these intricacies.

“For example, EVS has always been known for large, hardware-based servers intended mostly for sports productions,” Verlaine explained, “but the second part of our ‘Ingest-to-Post’ theme involves an approach to accelerate making multiple camera feeds instantly available for post-production with our completely new, software-only server called the XS-NEO. It is format agnostic, most importantly supporting the 24p type of recording favored by the cinema world.”

This new server, which takes advantage of EVS’ unique loop recording technology, is hosted on EVS’ PMR processing module and, although it can support baseband productions, is designed to embrace all the benefits of IP connectivity.

“It works in conjunction with our new IPD-VIA Ingest App that lets you schedule and control camera feeds ingested directly on the XS-NEO server,” he said.

EVS’s third introduction is the addition of virtualization to many of EVS’s systems.

“We’ve made it possible to virtualize certain backend resources,” Verlaine said, “letting you run the systems just with software control such as IPDirector, EVS’s live PAM (Production Asset Management) system or XTAccess media processing engines.”

The cost and space savings can be significant.

This virtualization can be deployed in two modes: using EVS’s own PMZ hypervisor processing appliance built specifically for mobile production units or third party virtual machines like those from Cisco or Dell.

“These are all part of the effort at EVS to streamline production processes as we take advantage of the benefits of IP connectivity,” Verlaine wrapped up, “while also celebrating our first 25 years of the emotions and success this company has enjoyed.”
