BVE 2019: AI, IP and Blockchain In Techflow Futures

Technologies like IP, cloud, HDR and Artificial Intelligence have been discussed in theory for years. 2019 could be the year of making things actually work. As digital democratisation gains momentum, the Techflow Futures Theatre at BVE is curated to inform and inspire the broadcast and production audience through expert panels and keynotes. We pick the highlights.

The tone for sessions in the Techflow Theatre is set by Florian Diederichsen, CTO at sports streaming specialist DAZN. AI and blockchain, identified as the key technologies and trends that are at the forefront of change within the industry are discussed by Diederichsen along with Marins Kalkanis, CEO, M2A Media in ‘Adopting architecture for a user led future’ on 26-Feb, 11:00 - 12:00.

Further exploration of blockchain’s potential can be found in Blockchain bingo (27-Feb; 16:45 - 17:30). In this panel session Cliff Fluet, MD at advisory firm Eleven and Min Teo who runs investment lab ConsenSys deliver an overview of what blockchain is and discuss how it might be useful to content and media companies, including the potential it has for content security, advertising and rights management.

AI takes the lead in three other TechFlow sessions. The theme across all of them is that AI is here and being tested and adopted across the production workflow. From live programming, to post production, adoption is growing and impacting vast sectors. Mike Evans, UX Research Lead at BBC R&D shares real life examples of AI in action, exploring the purpose behind the integration and how it has been helpful in the media space. He’ll also explain why exactly you should be looking at integrating AI into your technology stack on 26-Feb; 13:15 - 14:00.

AI’s use in sport production is considered a bit of a game-changer. In particular, Video Intelligence and Smart Content Cataloging are revolutionising the way soccer teams and brands are operating and delivering content to fans. For more on this head to Techflow Futures on 26-Feb; 12:15 - 13:00.

Building A.I. for creative tasks (28-Feb; 12:15 - 12:45) is about the deep learning tools that are specifically trained for high quality production content. Richard Welsh, CEO, Sundog Media Toolkit finds out how these tools can help us be more creative by removing boring manual tasks from processes and free up more time to exercise our imagination.

Switching focus a little, the building blocks for AI and all broadcast media production is IP. The industry continues to transition to IP network and IT technologies but we’ve still some way to go. To truly appreciate the relevance of IP and specifically ST2110, we must stand in the shoes of programme makers and understand the benefits to them. Join Tony Orme, technology editor of this parish to look at the benefits of IP from the point of view of production teams. Tony explains the fundamental differences between SDI and IP; discusses why IP solutions are more cost effective and investigates the benefits of Cloud and SaaS computing. He’ll also consider the relevance of off-prem and on-prem data centres and review the current state of IP integration and expectations for the future. All this at 15:45 - 16:15 on 26 Feb.

We know that IP connectivity provides flexibility from acquisition to consumption, but the evolution of the IP supply chain is evolving at different rates. ‘First out the blocks – early adopters in the IP domain’ (27-Feb; 12:15 - 13:00) will be an open discussion with those who braved the transition first, from contribution to networked buildings we explore learnings, progression and the current state of play with IP. Eric Bolten, VP at streaming specialist Zixi and Simon Reed, chief technologist for Evertz lead this one.

Achieving true agility in broadcast systems of the future is arguably about adopting modular software to quickly exchange best of breed technologies in the cloud.

‘Adopting microservices - the app store for broadcasters (26-Feb; 15:00 - 15:30) explores how companies are integrating such services into their architecture, keeping pace with competition and gaining a flexible and competitive edge.
