PRO TV Prepares for UHD With New Pebble Beach Playout Installation

Romanian commercial broadcaster PRO TV is set to go live with an entirely upgraded playout system during the early part of 2019. Transmitting seven channels from its headquarters in Bucharest, the company has future-proofed its operations centre with the capacity to implement Ultra HD at a later date.

After looking at a number of products from leading playout manufacturers, PRO TV opted to stay with Pebble Beach Systems, whose technology its had been using previously. The broadcaster has now replaced its existing Neptune automation with Pebble Beach Systems' Marina, Dolphin and Lighthouse ranges.

This new set-up will be used to distribute the main PRO TV service, plus five themed stations - PRO 2, PRO Cinema, PRO Gold, PRO X and MTV Romania - and PRO TV International. Pebble Beach Systems' Marina will handle playout automation, running multiple integrated channels controlled by the Dolphin system, with remote operations, control, playlist compilation and monitoring dealt with by the browser-based Lighthouse device.

The installation will feature mirrored playout chains for full redundancy and be based on a hybrid basis comprising devices best suited to the task. This aspect of the system will come under the control of Dolphin and include Vizrt graphics. Media asset management and archiving will be provided by other manufacturers.

While Dolphin's integral storage will form part of the new system, there will also be access to a shared media store from EditShare to create central and localised hubs. "Our new system brings PRO TV's playout infrastructure up to date making our facility UHD ready," comments the broadcaster's chief technology officer, Bodgan Andreescu.

Commissioning of the system is due to take place next month, with full implementation scheduled to take place in Q1 2019.
