Bitmovin, an established video infrastructure supplier for leading media companies around the world, has released its “Video Developer Report 2018” survey results and it’s full of useful and revealing information about the online digital distribution of audio and video content.
It delves into different types of content delivery infrastructures for both live and on-demand audio and video and is designed to help media business managers across the globe predict where the industry is headed in terms of streaming video.
With participation from a wide variety of professionals working in the online video industry—from broadcasters and publishers, to OTT streaming services and online video platforms—the survey results shed new light on which platforms and devices are most popular for the consumption of video or audio content in different regions of the world. The most common ad insertion standards and technologies deployed as well as the adoption rate of DRM/content protection systems, are also included.
Audio and video codecs are also spotlighted, as are the most common problems encountered when streaming video (such as broadcast latency and synchronized multiplatform distribution). There’s even a section on which business models are most commonly being employed.
The survey data on OTT adoption (by service type and brand) shows significant regional differences among the most popular OTT devices, including Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire, Apple TV andRoku. For example, Chromecast enjoyed single-digit gains with the developers in North America, EMEA and LATAM, but showed no progress in the APAC region.
The Survey responses came in from 67 countries, across six continents. Interestingly, there is an almost equal distribution between participants operating in the live and on-demand content environment (many work with both). And, nearly 70 percent of respondents work with professional premium content.
