SRT Alliance Signs Microsoft To Open Source Low Latency Streaming Standard

Latest SRT Alliance membership signals mass adoption of SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) for low latency video streaming workflows, it is claimed.

The SRT Alliance, founded by Haivision, announces that Microsoft has joined the initiative supporting the SRT Open Source Project – a collaboration to continuously develop the SRT protocol and technology stack for low latency video streaming across any network.

SRT optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks with low latency secure streams. SRT has been adopted by thousands of companies to get the highest quality streams to and across cloud-based video infrastructures.

There are more than 140 members in the SRT Alliance, a consortium of vendors and end users founded by Haivision and Wowza. The Alliance works to increase industry-wide awareness and adoption of SRT as a common standard for low-latency video transport over the internet.

SRT is open source and royalty free and has the support of VideoLAN’s VLC, Wireshark, FFMpeg, and the GStreamer open source projects in addition to the growing commercial support of the SRT Alliance member companies.

Microsoft is both a user of SRT within its substantial event production and streaming team and a developer seeking ways to optimize the video cloud services that it offers to clients globally.

“Microsoft’s support of the SRT Open Source Project demonstrates their recognition of SRT as the emerging de facto standard for low latency video streaming,” says Sylvio Jelovcich, vp, Global Alliances, Haivision. “The market is thirsty for open source, royalty free solutions to basic challenges. However, where networks and ecosystems are concerned, adoption is key.  Microsoft supporting the SRT movement is the biggest step towards global adoption.”

“Having pioneered adaptive streaming for the industry and seen the benefits of broad industry adoption, we believe in the need for a simple, scalable and efficient ingest protocol for supporting large scale live events from the cloud,” said Sudheer Sirivara, General Manager, Azure Media & AI Platform, Microsoft Corp. “SRT is a proven video transport that lends itself well for cloud based live workflows. By joining the SRT Alliance, we hope to create broader support, enthusiasm and adoption.”
