Indian Broadcaster Doordarshan Migrates to IP Production With Lawo

India’s public service broadcaster Doordarshan has taken a further step towards full IP production by installing a 16-fader crystal desk with I/O extension from German audio and video workflow technology vendor Lawo in its latest New Delhi-based Outside Broadcast (OB) van.

The IP-based broadcast production console is at the center of the vehicle’s main audio control room, which was built under direction from the project’s principle contractor, AGIV/SatCom.

“We selected the [Lawo] crystal console as it provides us with state-of-the-art IP technology, enabling us to evolve our workflows with its flexibility in operation and routing,” said JK Chandira, Additional Director General of Studio Design at Doordarshan. “The Lawo crystal fits the Doordarshan OB workflow because it can be customized to do anything. With a mix of sports, news and music programming, we really needed that ability. Being slim and easy-to-use were further key points in our decision."

Lawo’s crystal range of mixing consoles has recently been redesigned with a new surface providing a clearer and slimmer layout making it easier to use, which was a factor in the decision by Doordarshan and its contractor to deploy it. It has also been proven in the field with over 1,000 installations in radio facilities and small broadcast applications, SNG and ENG vans, and TV production suites. It provides an entry point into Lawo’s range of mixers.

Doordarshan (DD) is one of India's largest broadcasters measured by studio and transmitter infrastructure, providing radio, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas through the Indian Network and Radio India. It was founded by the Indian government in 1959.
