In the midst of a rapidly changing content delivery environment, and refreshed with new private equity money, Ericsson is rethinking (and rebranding) its Media Solutions business to focus on supporting and delivering immersive media experiences for everyone, everywhere. Heretofore its customers have included over 900 cable, satellite, telecom service providers and broadcasters around the world.
That clientele won't change, but the company’s message of a one-stop shop for content ingest, processing and delivery to multiple platforms could bring new types of file-based IP infrastructures to full deployment a lot faster. That’s become a key to success for content distributors targeting the multi-screen, on-demand and immersive world of entertainment.
Therefore, gathering up its collection of smaller pioneering companies that have developed and sold technology in relative silos while targeting their respective customer bases, Ericsson has announced a revamped, singular entity called MediaKind that looks to “embody the concept that media should inspire and unite humankind.”
Angel Ruiz, current President and CEO of Ericsson’s Media Solutions, will head the new company in the same capacity.
MediaKind’s end-to-end video delivery ecosystems include Emmy award-winning video compression solutions for contribution and direct-to-consumer video service distribution, advertising and content personalization solutions, high efficiency cloud DVR, and TV and video delivery platforms. Companies under its umbrella include Aspex, Azuki Systems, Envivio, Fabrix, HyCGroup, Microsoft Mediaroom and TANDBERG Television.

The stated vision for MediaKind is to “address a new age where media is the fabric of society, captivating audiences, changing perceptions and bringing us together.”
Ericsson said MediaKind will continue its deep investment into its innovative product portfolio as part of its commitment to helping its customers differentiate and address the shifting media marketplace. At the upcoming IBC show in Amsterdam MediaKind said it plans to share deeper insights into its next generation solutions and applications.
On January 31, 2018, it was announced that One Equity Partners, a private equity firm is set to become the majority owner of Ericsson Media Solutions. The MediaKind brand will be carried forward when the transaction between One Equity Partners and Ericsson is completed.
Among the announced MediaKind management team, Mark Russell will serve as Chief Technology & Strategy Officer.
