Embrionix’s software-designed modules allow users to repurpose each miniaturized gateway with frame sync.
With the migration from SDI to IP infrastructures in full swing across the industry, broadcast engineers tasked with setting up these internal networks are looking for new ways to perform signal processing in the easiest and most cost-effective way.
For the past few years the company Embrionix Design has sought to help its customers do their job better, faster and less expensively. It specializes in compact, high-density IP gateways, signal processors, converters and multiviewers, develops components that take up minimal rack space while consuming less power.
It recently announced that it has added frame synchronization technology for file encapsulation to its SMPTE ST2110-compatible, SDI-to-IP miniaturized emSFP and emFusion gateways. The new option allows broadcasters to eliminate the costs and time involved in frame syncing signals before the IP gateway and ensures free-run SDI signals are aligned with the IP system’s PTP Grandmaster. The new, compact frame sync will also address timing alignment challenges with non-Epoch-aware equipment while ensuring the alignment of non-genlocked SDI cameras and remote feeds.
These modules are based on a small form factor (SFP+) that can either be installed inside a standard 10GE IP switch or inside third-party equipment with SFP cages. The emSFP Software Defined SFP can be configured to run different encapsulation process such as ST2110, ST2022-1/2 and ST2022-6.
While developing the new SFP-based gateway, Renaud Lavoie, president of Embrionix, said they listened to customers’ concerns about the lack of space and the need for more capability in a single, hot-swappable gateway.
“These software-designed modules are like a Swiss Army knife,” said Lavoie. “They allow our customers to repurpose each miniaturized gateway into a processor, up/down/cross converter, multiviewer or encapsulator with frame sync, depending on their changing needs.”
The SDI to IP emSFP-Gateway product family provides many practical interfaces to bridge SDI signals into IP. The modules are based on a small form factor (SFP+ / SFP28) that can either be installed inside a standard 10GE or 25GE IP switch or within the Embrionix 25GE emMODULAR aggregation frame. The emSFP can be inserted directly inside a 10G SFP+ or 25GE SFP28 cages with a direct interface to a 1GE, 10GE and 25GE network, drastically simplifying the gradual integration of IP and SDI equipment.
