NEP UK Builds SMPTE ST 2110 Complaint OB Vans For Live Sports Production

NEP UK has announced it is offering clients two new OB vans that are fully compliant with the SMPTE ST2110 standard. The new mobile production vehicles, named Ceres and Venus, are designed for major events, sports fixtures and other large-scale productions. Venus recently completed its first job and both trucks will be supporting several major live events over the summer.

The company said a major differentiator for these vehicles is the significant reduction in cabling. Each onboard system requires far less fiber-optic cable compared to the miles of coaxial cable previously required. This reduces weight on the trucks and makes set up fast and easy. The new IP equipment also requires increased cooling, therefore the new NEP UK truck design takes into account the ability to provide greater air conditioning and all equipment can be cooled separately in operational areas.

Each vehicle includes the same ST 2110 system infrastructure, based around a series of Grass Valley IQ UCP 25GbE Gateway cards that enable two-way links between the IP-based equipment and the existing baseband technology that is still needed to accommodate clients using SDI feeds. The trucks can also accommodate dual-level UHD and HDI-SDI projects simultaneously, thanks to onboard Arista 7504 IP switches that provide ample data throughput and data linking capacity to realize NEP’s “single virtual truck concept.”

Venus and Ceres are also equipped with HDR and IP-enabled test and measurement solutions from Phabrix. This includes three Qx 12G signal generation, analysis and monitoring solutions, to accommodate clients regardless of whether they are using SDI or IP feeds. NEP has also selected four Rx2000 units, with each Rx providing up to 4 channels of 2K/3G/HD/SD-SDI video/audio analysis and monitoring (dual inputs per analyzer).

Other equipment installed in each vehicle includes Grass Valley Kayenne Video Production Centers and Kahuna production switchers, Calrec sound desk, an RTS ADAM digital matrix intercom system (with related KP-series keypanels), and an Axon Cerebrum control system. The RTS system supports up to 272 ports in a single 7RU rack and can be expanded to 880 ports for large productions.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to effectively make our trucks larger - the only limit is the number of ports available on the switch,” said Rob Newton, Engineering and Technical Director, NEP UK. “We can put the truck in any location and connect multiple IP systems, be they our flypacks, our trucks or our media hubs, creating a fully scalable and large broadcast system - the kind that you would only previously find in a fixed studio set up.”

The SMPTE ST2110 standard provides a road map for the carriage, synchronization, and description of separate elementary essence streams over Internet Protocol (IP) networks in real-time for live production.
