If you are a celebrity watcher, Sky News has the online artificial intelligence technology for you. The British broadcaster will use cloud-based machine learning technology from AWS Elemental to help viewers identify those in attendance at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor during its online coverage of the upcoming UK royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
As guests make their way into the chapel, AWS will capture live video and send it to cloud-based AWS Elemental Media Services for multiscreen viewing optimization.
Sky is combining a custom data analysis platform from GrayMeta (and AWS technology partner) with the Amazon Rekognition video and image analysis service for real-time identification of guests and tagging with related information.
The technology—leveraging artificial intelligence algorithms and other media services from AWS Elemental—will quickly recognize a specific person within the video frame, based on a library of images of that person, and display their name and certain information about them.
Accessible in the Sky News app or via skynews.com, the “Royal Wedding: Who’s Who Live” function will allow viewers to select a guest during the live stream, and the platform will identify and provide background on that person. An on-demand video asset, including catch-up functionality, will also be generated to allow on-demand viewing shortly after the live broadcast.
To make it happen, Sky News is collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS), GrayMeta and another tech partner, UI Centric. As guests make their way into the chapel, AWS will capture live video and send it to cloud-based AWS Elemental Media Services for multiscreen viewing optimization.
Sky News will also use the Amazon CloudFront content delivery network to unify the content for distribution to viewers. UI Centric has designed and developed the front-end application and video player to enhance the experience and user interface accessed by Sky News viewers.
The broadcaster will make its coverage available in HD and 4K UHD.
