Riedel Expands SmartPanel Range with Multi-Display Hybrid Lever Unit

Intercom and networking developer Riedel Communications moved on with its 1200 Series of SmartPanels at the 2018 NAB Show by introducing the latest in the range, the RSP-1232HL. This offers multiple multi-touch displays, hybrid lever-keys and the ability to be adapted to a user’s specific requirements and way of working.

With the introduction of the SmartPanel series of interfaces, which is app based, Riedel said it was trying to rethink the comms user control in terms of flexibility, power and connectivity. The RSP-1232HL features a multi-layer monitoring display with full-colour operation and 32 hybrid lever keys. Each key has an integral rotary encoder for the selection of a variety of parameters associated with that particular lever.

These levers have been ergonomically designed to make operation of the key panel as easy and flexible as possible. Developed over a two-year period, the RSP-1232HL supports different ways of working, including 'Talk and Listen' and 'Talk and Mute'. The first method involves the user starting with a mute panel and then selecting what sources they want to hear. In the second, all incoming signals are 'live', with the user choosing which to turn off.

Other features include Logical Groups. This enables those running the panel to select customised colours to either label the keys or the LED rings surrounding each key. The key labels each have a main eight-character naming display, a 16-character sub-label and identifying icons that can be set by the user. Also available is a signalling system, similarly based on icons, which shows the status of each key - such as Open Mic, Muted Key and Incoming Beep - at any point.

As with any intercom or network device today, connectivity is a major consideration. The RSP-1232HL works on both the AES3 digital audio exchange format and SMPTE ST2110-30, otherwise known at the AES67 audio over IP interoperability standard. Two fibre SFP (small form-factor pluggable) and two RJ45 connections are provided for bringing AES65 signals into the unit, which can be daisy-chained and linked to redundant units for backup.

Also included on the panel are stereo loudspeakers, front-panel mic mute capability, front and rear USB slots, Bluetooth connections and four-wire ports. The RSP-1232HL additionally features NFC (Near Field Communication) connectivity as found on Riedel's Bolero wireless products, which were also shown during the NAB Show. The DECT-based system was launched last year and has now been enhanced with a series of new features.

Most notable amongst these is the Standalone Operation app, which allows Bolero antennas to be daisy-chained in a line or a redundant ring using a synchronised, low latency TDM network. This works on a plug-and-play basis and does not require configuring of any IP component. Also new is an external power supply, a single-RU, half-width external interface unit and support for Bluetooth headsets.
