NewTek’s NDI Enables IP Production at NAB 2018

NewTek’s Network Device Interface (NDI) technology was widely adopted for all-IP production at many exhibits throughout the NAB 2018 Show.

NewTek came to the NAB Show 2018 riding the wave of their successful NDI (Network Device Interface) royalty-free protocol technology for video over IP that Brian Olson, vice president of product management for NewTek, said was being watched by tens of millions of people even before Microsoft incorporated it into their Skype technology. “Now, the viewer base is upwards of 300 million,” he told me in an exclusive interview, “and the NDI ecosystem story is just getting started.”

In fact, Olson said that NDI vers. 3.5 was being launched at this year’s Vegas gala, quite a step forward since its original introduction at IBC 2016, now giving it a 200% improvement in 4K performance.

‘We’ve also switched to unicast UDP (User Datagram Protocol) with FEC (Forward Error Correction) as the default network connectivity, although it will also do multicast,” Olson said. “Unicast UDP with FEC will help you with networks affected by high packet latency as in those using long distance runs.”

One of NewTek’s most significant announcements in Las Vegas empowered by NDI and its new SMPTE ST 2110 support was their LiveGraphics workflow. LiveGraphics lets users author real time motion graphics in Adobe Photoshop CC, animate them in After Effects CC and make them available for live output from TriCaster TC1 and NewTek IP Series. Fulfilling the real time promise of Adobe Creative Cloud, LiveGraphics offers fully replaceable text and images that can be driven by live data and web content.

“This has been a dream for many graphics artists for a long time,” Olson said. “Being able to create motion graphics without being dependent on a proprietary hardware graphics engine using software that almost everyone is familiar with is going to make animated titling a reality to millions of artists.”

NewTek also added to its line of I/O connect devices for SMPTE 2110 called the NC1 Studio I/O IP Module. It is a studio module that can be remote and connect to 4 channels of SMPTE ST 2110 for their TriCaster TC1 and NewTek IP Series.

Olson called this a gateway for NDI to and from SMPTE 2110 letting users install NDI without them ending up becoming IP islands that they can’t get in and out of.

“The NC1 Studio I/O IP Module provides a comfort factor for higher end broadcasters,” he told me. “We had it running in the IP Showcase in the Interoperability Pavilion on the NAB floor, showing a SMPTE 2110 compliant signal successfully coming from one of our cameras.”
