The C700 s35 camera is joined by the C700FF with larger 5.9K sensor.
Canon has updated the Cinema EOS line-up with a new version of the C700 camera. The C700FF uses the same body as the existing C700, but has a new, larger 5.9K CMOS sensor, with a 17:9 aspect ratio and a 43.1 mm diagonal (DSLR FF image circle is 43.2mm). Designed to be partnered with the Codex recorder, the two together can record 5.9K RAW. As an alternative, the 5.9K sensor output can be internally processed to 4K and recorded to an internal CFast card. The camera supports multi-format recording, shooting with EF, PL and anamorphic lenses.
The Canon Cinema EOS C700 FF is a version of the current C700, but with a new, larger 5932 x 3140 sensor suited to spherical or anaomorphic production. The newly developed 38.1mm x 20.1mm CMOS sensor has a similar image circle to full-frame 35 x 24mm, and is designed for high-end production, enabling filmmakers to capture filmic images with unprecedented low noise, natural skin tones, shallow depth-of-field, and a broad ranging tonality that exceeds 15-stops of dynamic range. This provides freedom and flexibility in grading and post production, as well as in the capture of HDR images.
There has been a recent trend to larger sensors, with greater light-gathering capacity for higher sensitivity, and shallow depth of field effects. There is no shortage of full-frame lenses, with conventional still lenses (Canon has sold over 130M EOS lenses), or cinema-style lens with the larger image circle coverage.
Focussing can be challenging with full format lenses. When wide open the depth of field can be a few inches. As an aid to camera operators, the C700FF uses the Canon dual-pixel AF technology to drive a focus guide in the viewfinder. This is not autofocus—an anathema to cinematographers and outside their current working practices—but if AF is required, it can be used with suitable Canon EF autofocus-enabled lenses.
The camera can be used with a s35 sensor crop if s35 coverage lenses are to be used.
The Canon FF format is a better fit to video aspect ratios than the 3:2 full-frame 35mm.
The newly designed sensor also allows the user to explore different sensor modes including full frame, Super 35mm and Super 16mm, whilst recording in a wide range of versatile recording formats including ProRes, XF-AVC (internally to CFast cards) and Canon’s uncompressed Cinema RAW.
Using the dedicated Codex CDX-36150, the EOS C700 FF can record 5.9k 12/10-bit RAW, with 4K and 2K RAW 12-bit options available, as well as shooting ProRes 4K. For high frame rate shooting, the EOS C700 FF can shoot up to 60fps (5.9K), 72fps (4K crop) and at up to 168fps (2K crop). Using the 5.9K oversampling processing, the camera is also able to deliver a higher quality 4K and 2K image with reduced moiré and noise.
Canon has indicated that it will be possible to update exisiting C700 camera with the FF sensor at Canon service centers, but details are yet to be released.
