AES67 compliance for GatesAir Intraplex IP Link range

GatesAir will make further moves into fully compatible, networked audio with the launch of an AES67-compliant audio over IP (AoIP) codec at the 2018 NAB Show. The Intraplex IP Link 200A is designed to be fully interoperable between studio centres and remote transmitter sites.

Known for its TV and radio transmission equipment, including links technology, GatesAir has designed the IP Link 200A to work with all available encoding algorithms over wide-area IP networks, as well as with the AES67 interoperability standard. It is a hybrid unit accommodating both AES67 and analogue/AES3 feeds at the same time, with the ability to convert between the different signals.

Because there are specific channels for each format, people still using analogue or AES3 feeds are able to upgrade in the future if and when they switch to AoIP. Those working with mixed signals are able to convert between AES67 and analogue/AES3 as necessary. Among other features are the ability to enhance both the reliability of streams and increased system security.

Like other models in the IP Link codec family, the 200A features GatesAir's Dynamic Stream Splicing software, which is used to mitigate packet loss in the IP feed, as well as preventing the transmission going off air by using multiple redundant streams. This is done by the Dynamic Stream Splicing feature taking data from the redundant streams, which exist either on the same network or different, independent pathways. An integral firewall and a packet filtering feature help improve network security by preventing any attacks from outside.

Commenting on the introduction of the IP Link 200A, Rich Redmond, chief product officer for GatesAir, said, "Broadcasters now have flexibility to interconnect audio using AES67, analogue/AES3 or in a mixed mode, which provides a transitional path to an all-Audio over IP interconnect. Its design simplifies the cabling and interconnection requirements from our codecs to the wide area network and provides our customers with a true AES67 AoIP device that is interoperable with today's leading AoIP systems, including WheatNet-IP, RAVENNA and Livewire+."

The IP Link 200A will be displayed at the NAB Show together with GatesAir's Intraplex products, including the bandwidth efficient Intraplex IP Link MPXp for digital (AES193) and analogue FM MPX transports and the Introplex IPConnect, aimed at data transport over IP networks. Details of new features for the IPConnect range are due to be released this month.
